SMU Introduces Hands-On Industry Graduate Diploma in Generative AI for SMEs

SMU Launches Hands-On Generative AI Diploma for SMEs

The SMU Academy, in collaboration with the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) and Straits Interactive, has unveiled an Industry Graduate Diploma focused on Generative AI, Large Language Models, and AI Governance. This program is celebrated as Singapore’s first hands-on initiative of its kind.

Target Audience and Concept

This program is designed specifically for non-technical business professionals, fostering the development of what the partners refer to as “AI Bilingualists.” These individuals can effectively navigate both business strategy and AI delivery, with a keen focus on governance and responsible utilization of AI technologies.

Program Design

The graduate diploma encompasses training in generative AI technologies and AI governance, structured through stackable components. Participants must complete two Advanced Certificates:

  • Advanced Certificate in Generative AI, Ethics and Data Protection
  • Advanced Certificate in Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) Apps Design and Prompt Engineering

Roles targeted by the program span various business functions, including customer service, compliance, human resources, learning and development, and marketing. Notably, the program does not require prior programming expertise.

Assessment and Learning Routes

The graduate diploma includes an assessment component requiring learners to pass an overall examination. Additionally, they must fulfill further requirements through:

  • Project Route: Participants design and implement an AI solution that addresses a business challenge, emphasizing applied learning within organizational contexts.
  • Workshop and Networking Route: This alternative route involves attending 16 enrichment workshops and networking sessions, focusing on professional skill development and connections.

Collaboration and Resources

This diploma builds upon a prior collaboration among the three organizations, with ASME providing access to SMEs, SMU Academy handling course delivery, and Straits Interactive contributing expertise in data protection and AI governance.

The program is linked to the book ‘AI Factory: AI Capability Guide for SMEs’, authored by Straits Interactive CEO Kevin Shepherdson, serving as a learning resource and reference for SMEs seeking to integrate AI into their operations.

Pathway to Further Education

The diploma is positioned within a broader framework of qualifications at SMU Academy, providing a pathway into the SMU Industry Practice Master of Digital Economy. This master’s degree is modular and emphasizes applied learning for working professionals, also connecting with SMU’s expanded credit exemption framework for polytechnic post-diploma holders.

Industry Context and Importance

The launch of this program coincides with a growing emphasis on workforce skills related to generative AI and governance. SMEs often face challenges regarding staff time and specialist expertise. Thus, training programs increasingly offer modular formats and applied project work.

ASME has linked this diploma to its broader initiatives on AI adoption among SMEs, providing free community resources, workshops, and experimentation spaces to aid in this transition. According to ASME President Ang Yuit, “For SMEs, AI adoption is no longer optional; it is a competitiveness imperative.”

Conclusion

The SMU Academy frames this graduate diploma as a strategic move toward developing AI-ready business leaders in Singapore. By integrating real-world client projects and governance frameworks directly into the curriculum, it aims to empower professionals to design and implement effective AI solutions.

Straits Interactive emphasizes its role in closing the gap between learning and practical application, stating that the program supports non-technical professionals in becoming true AI Bilingualists—builders and governors of AI technology.

Registration is now open, with the program set to commence later in the year.
