Embassy Outlines India’s Vision For AI In Washington
In a significant announcement, India’s upcoming AI Impact Summit in New Delhi will focus on three core themes: people, planet, and progress. The objective is to transition global discussions on artificial intelligence from principles to practical outcomes, as stated by India’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington, Namgya Khampa.
Khampa’s comments were made during the event titled “US-India Strategic Cooperation on AI”, organized by the Observer Research Foundation America, the SpecialCompetitive Studies Project, and the Embassy of India. This gathering at the US Capitol convened policymakers and experts to outline shared priorities ahead of the summit.
AI as a Transformative Force
Khampa emphasized that artificial intelligence has evolved from a niche technology to a fundamental context that influences economic competitiveness, geopolitical power, and societal outcomes. She highlighted India’s approach to AI, which is informed by its experience with digital public infrastructure. This infrastructure has shown how inclusive and low-cost technology can transform governance at a large scale.
Notable platforms like Aadhaar and the unified payments interface have enabled access to public services, finance, and identity for over 1.4 billion Indians.
AI as a “Force Multiplier”
India perceives AI not merely as a standalone solution, but as a “force multiplier” that enhances its digital public infrastructure, making systems smarter, more responsive, more productive, and more accessible. This shift aims to bring AI from the abstract to everyday life and from innovation to transformation.
A Global Summit with a Southern Perspective
The AI Impact Summit is poised to be the first major global AI summit led by a country from the Global South. The summit aims to correct existing imbalances in global AI governance by encouraging broader participation and ownership without compromising standards.
Framework of the Summit
Khampa outlined the summit’s framework, emphasizing the themes of people, planet, and progress, which reflect India’s vision of “AI for all.” AI should empower individuals rather than marginalize them, be resource-efficient, and align with sustainability goals, while also supporting equitable economic growth, especially in sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, and public service delivery.
Technological Resilience and Geopolitical Factors
In light of increasing geopolitical tensions and the weaponization of technology supply chains, Khampa stressed that technological resilience has become a key component of national strategy. She pointed to the India-US trust initiative as a mechanism to advance cooperation from conceptual discussions to concrete projects in areas such as research, standards, skilling, and next-generation technologies.
Building Inclusive AI Systems
India’s linguistic diversity and its population-scale digital platforms create a unique environment for developing inclusive, multilingual AI systems. In contrast, the United States offers cutting-edge research, capital, and advanced use cases that can be tested in India and scaled globally.
