India Tightens Regulations on AI Use in Social Media
India has recently implemented stricter regulations governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media platforms. These new rules mandate that platforms must remove flagged AI-generated and altered content, including deepfakes, within a significantly shortened timeframe of three hours, down from the previous 36-hour deadline.
Regulatory Changes and Implementation Dates
The changes are a result of amendments to the Information Technology – Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code – Rules, 2021, which are set to take effect on February 20. According to public broadcaster All India Radio, these updates aim to enhance accountability among social media platforms.
Content Labeling and Removal Requirements
Under the new regulations, social media platforms are required to prominently label AI-generated content to ensure it is easily noticeable to users. This labeling must be displayed in a manner that guarantees visibility and understandability.
Additionally, platforms are compelled to remove flagged content within three hours of receiving a notice from authorities or a court order. Moreover, intermediaries must take action to remove or disable access to any content flagged by an individual within two hours of receiving a complaint.
Context of Digital Expansion in India
In recent years, India has rapidly expanded its digital footprint. As of last October, it boasted the world’s largest Facebook audience, exceeding 403 million users, alongside the largest YouTube audience. This growth has been accompanied by increasing efforts from authorities to curb disinformation on social media platforms.
Government’s Commitment to User Safety
The Indian government has expressed its commitment to ensuring an “open, safe, trusted, and accountable internet” for all users, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and children. The Ministry of Electronics and IT stated that these policies are designed to eliminate any form of unlawful content, particularly those that could incite violence or exploitation.
Investment in AI and Renewable Energy
In a separate development, the Adani Group has announced plans to invest $100 billion in renewable-energy-powered, hyperscale AI-ready data centers by 2035. This initiative aims to establish a long-term “sovereign energy and compute platform”, positioning India as a leader in the emerging Intelligence Revolution.
This announcement coincides with the ongoing AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, which is expected to host delegates from over 30 countries.
