AI Misconduct Scandals and Their Impact on Universities’ Global Rankings
A series of artificial intelligence (AI)-related cheating scandals at Korean universities poses significant long-term risks for their global rankings, potentially harming their reputation scores.
Pressure to Adapt to AI
As Korea’s top universities face increasing pressure to adapt to AI technologies, most institutions have yet to translate this urgency into concrete action. The QS, a global higher education analytics firm known for its widely cited university rankings, has indicated that AI-related academic misconduct controversies could influence university rankings.
Reputation and Ranking Implications
In response to a query from The Korea Times, QS stated that such incidents are not directly assessed but could be reflected indirectly in academic and employer reputation scores—indicators that hold significant weight in global rankings. Simona Bizzozero, QS communications director, noted that historical evidence shows sustained reputational damage from governance failures or academic misconduct can shape how institutions are viewed by global academic and employer communities over time.
Growing Importance of AI Governance
According to Bizzozero, the capacity of universities to manage AI responsibly is becoming an increasingly crucial consideration in higher education assessments. “The rapid spread of generative AI has driven deeper engagement with universities, policymakers, and employers on issues ranging from assessment design to academic integrity and governance,” she explained.
While QS does not have immediate plans to add AI governance or academic integrity as standalone indicators in its global rankings, both issues remain central to its ongoing research and sector engagement. As part of this initiative, QS has developed an open-source AI Capability Framework to help institutions assess their readiness to deploy AI responsibly across governance, teaching, and research.
Slow Response from Korean Universities
Despite the mounting criticism following a series of AI-related academic misconduct cases, Korean universities have been slow to respond, with measures primarily limited to post-incident follow-ups. For instance, Yonsei University had established AI ethics guidelines but faced several technology-assisted misconduct cases since last year, and has yet to outline concrete follow-up measures or broader systemic changes.
Recently, local media reported a group cheating case involving the manipulation of clinical training photographs by students at Yonsei University’s College of Dentistry, where 34 out of 59 students submitted altered images as part of a practical training course.
Guidelines and Enforcement Challenges
In November of the previous year, approximately 194 out of 600 students enrolled in a fully online course on natural language processing and ChatGPT were found to have used AI to cheat on a midterm exam. While the university’s recent AI guidelines advise faculty to state their policies on AI tool usage in course syllabi, the university acknowledged that these measures are not mandatory and lack enforceability.
An official stated, “The guidelines function more as recommended practices than enforceable rules.” The university plans to update its AI guidelines before the upcoming semester, though officials expressed uncertainty about finalizing the revisions on time.
Case Studies and Future Directions
At Seoul National University, instances of AI misconduct first appeared during a midterm exam for a statistics course last October, with additional online cheating cases surfacing despite tighter oversight measures. In response, the university announced new AI guidelines that permit the use of AI tools while placing the responsibility for AI-generated output on the user.
Under this framework, instructors have the discretion to allow AI use in their courses, with students facing penalties for academic ethics violations if they misuse AI contrary to faculty directives. However, the university was unavailable for comment on QS’s statement regarding potential reputational implications stemming from AI-related academic misconduct.
