The Global Center on AI Governance: Economics of Artificial Intelligence in Africa Short Course 2026

The application period for the 2026 Economics of Artificial Intelligence in Africa Short Course is now open, with a deadline set for 9th February 2026. This fully funded course, organized by the Global Center on AI Governance in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand, aims to equip participants with essential skills to understand the economic implications of AI as it transforms markets, labor, and power across Africa.

Course Objectives

This short course is tailored for public officials, professionals from regional organizations, international development agencies, the private sector, as well as researchers and academics. It will provide participants with the ability to:

  • Interpret and analyze how AI is reshaping African economies.
  • Discuss and evaluate the impact of economic policy, regulation, and investment decisions on AI development.

Course Structure

The course is delivered entirely online and spans a period of five weeks, from March 2nd to April 9th, 2026. It combines:

  • Live virtual seminars
  • Expert-led discussions
  • Applied case studies

Participants will engage with leading scholars from Africa and around the globe, partake in interactive learning activities, and complete reflective assessments. Upon successful completion, learners will receive a certificate of competency.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Background: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in relevant fields such as public policy, social and economic development, artificial intelligence, African studies, or related disciplines.
  • Professional Experience: Relevant professional experience that contributes to course discussions, including work in governance, public service, public policy, and international development.
  • Geographic Diversity: Indicate location and geographical scope of work.
  • Institutional Affiliation: Indicate current institutional affiliation.
