EU AI Office Establishes Signatory Taskforce to Guide Compliance with General-Purpose AI Rules
The European Commission’s AI Office has announced the formation of a new Signatory Taskforce under the General-Purpose AI (GPAI) Code of Practice. This initiative aims to support companies in their preparations for the enforcement of the EU AI Act’s regulations concerning advanced AI models.
Overview of the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice
The General-Purpose AI Code of Practice is a voluntary instrument designed to assist providers of general-purpose AI models in demonstrating their compliance with the AI Act. Although the Act’s requirements for transparency, safety, and accountability have been applicable since August 2, 2025, enforcement is set to commence in August 2026.
The newly established Taskforce aims to promote a consistent interpretation and implementation of the Code ahead of this enforcement deadline.
Composition and Role of the Taskforce
Chaired by the AI Office, the Signatory Taskforce comprises companies that have signed onto the Code and opted to become members of the Taskforce. According to the Commission, a significant majority of Code signatories have joined this initiative.
The Taskforce will function as a forum for exchanging insights regarding the practical application of the Code’s commitments. It may also contribute to the development of guidance documents while respecting the formal public consultation processes of the AI Office.
Engagement and Insights
In addition to facilitating discussions on technological developments, research findings, and emerging evidence pertinent to compliance with the Code, the Taskforce may also gather insights from third-party stakeholders. Regular updates on regulatory expectations will be part of its agenda.
Meetings will be convened by the AI Office at least once a year, with the possibility of more frequent gatherings based on the needs of the members or the initiative of the AI Office.
Accountability Measures
To ensure public accountability, the AI Office has published a Taskforce Vademecum, which contains a list of participants. The Office has committed to registering meetings and providing high-level summaries, subject to considerations of commercial confidentiality.
Contextual Framework
This initiative follows a similar model to the Permanent Taskforce established under the Code of Conduct on Disinformation, which is linked to the Digital Services Act. It underscores the EU’s effort to blend voluntary industry cooperation with mandatory AI regulation.
