Once AI identities are integrated into the same governance structure as human identities, organizations can provide stakeholders with a clear overview of:

  • Total AI and non-human identity count.
  • Percentage with named owners and defined business purposes.
  • Number of high-risk AI identities with violations.
  • Time-to-remediation for policy breaches.

This approach shifts the narrative from abstract discussions about AI risks to tangible governance metrics that can be defended and improved.

Addressing Common Objections

Two common objections arise in discussions surrounding federated governance:

  • “Can’t we just extend our IAM tool?” While IAM products can manage some aspects of AI identities, they typically lack the capacity to model ownership, business context, and lifecycle workflows necessary for comprehensive governance.
  • “Isn’t this just adding complexity?” The reality is that complexity already exists in the form of unmanaged service accounts and shadow AI tools. A federated governance layer organizes this complexity and provides a coherent governance strategy.
