The Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) is a pioneering initiative aimed at measuring and tracking countries’ commitments to responsible artificial intelligence (AI). This project seeks to gather and assess on-the-ground evidence regarding the state of AI governance, and it presents an exceptional opportunity for individuals to contribute significantly to this global endeavor.

Opportunity Overview

As a Country Researcher, your role will involve conducting primary data collection within your designated country. You will be responsible for completing the GIRAI questionnaire and utilizing various survey tools to gather evidence on frameworks, government actions, and the involvement of non-state actors in advancing responsible AI.

Successful applicants will receive training through mandatory capacity-building sessions that focus on responsible AI from a human rights perspective. This training will equip you with the necessary skills to execute the project effectively.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of Country Researchers include:

  • Conducting comprehensive primary data collection using the GIRAI questionnaire.
  • Participating in training sessions to understand GIRAI’s methodology and data collection strategies.
  • Adhering to established data quality standards and timelines as outlined by the GIRAI team.
  • Assessing and documenting evidence related to various thematic areas that reflect human rights-based principles for responsible AI.

Benefits and Compensation

Compensation for this role ranges from USD $1,000 to USD $3,000 per Country Researcher. The final amount will be determined based on the volume of evidence collected and the economic context of the designated country.

Eligibility Criteria

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • In-depth knowledge of AI governance and the ethical implications of AI technologies.
  • Advanced research skills with a focus on responsible AI, data protection, and data sharing.
  • Familiarity with recent policy developments related to AI within the designated country.
  • Strong command of written and spoken English, along with fluency in one or more official languages of the designated country.
  • Experience in online data collection and assessment of documentary evidence.
  • Availability for project commitment, including a training session in September 2025 and data collection from October to December 2025.
