AI Governance Training for Policymakers in Egypt

UNDP and GSMA Launch AI Capacity-Building Programme for Policymakers in Egypt

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Egypt, in partnership with GSMA, has initiated a high-level training programme focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) capacity building for policymakers. This programme brings together senior government officials, regulators, and representatives from key national institutions at UNDP Egypt’s premises in Cairo.

Regional Participation and Cross-Regional Dialogue

The programme also features participation from policymakers and representatives from Libya, Sudan, Tanzania, and Jordan. This reflects the growing importance of cross-regional dialogue and South–South cooperation in shaping responsible AI governance.

Commitment to Digital Transformation

This two-day programme embodies a shared commitment by UNDP and GSMA to support Egypt’s digital transformation agenda and to strengthen national capacities for responsible, inclusive, and future-ready AI governance. As artificial intelligence reshapes economies and governance systems worldwide, ensuring that AI systems are safe, transparent, ethical, and human-centered has become a priority.

Focus of the Training Programme

The training aims to enhance policymakers’ understanding of AI governance frameworks, regulatory approaches, and international best practices. Delivered by GSMA’s global experts, the programme introduces practical tools such as the Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap to help institutions assess their current readiness and identify pathways for responsible AI adoption.

Insights from UNDP and GSMA

Chitose Noguchi, the Resident Representative of UNDP Egypt, emphasizes the importance of having clear rules and shared values as AI becomes integrated into government work. “This training helps public institutions work together, build practical understanding, and ensure AI is used in a transparent and inclusive manner that benefits people,” Noguchi states.

Jawad Abbassi, Head of MENA at GSMA, highlights that “Artificial intelligence represents a significant opportunity for countries across the region to accelerate digital transformation and drive sustainable economic growth.” He stresses that realizing this potential depends on establishing clear governance frameworks that foster innovation while building public trust.

Platform for Dialogue and Coordination

The programme serves as a platform for dialogue and coordination across institutions, recognizing that effective AI governance necessitates a collective vision and shared responsibility across government entities. This initiative marks another milestone in the collaboration between UNDP and GSMA, which has been focused on strengthening national digital and innovation capacities in Egypt and the region.

As both organizations continue to work together, this training sets the stage for deeper cooperation in the future, reinforcing their commitment to responsible AI governance and the enhancement of digital capabilities.
