A new study finds that AI-generated disinformation is not only escalating in scale and sophistication but also exposing deep structural weaknesses in how user-generated content (UGC) platforms are regulated, monitored, and controlled.

The study, titled “Evolutionary Game Analysis of AI-Generated Disinformation Governance on UGC Platforms Based on Prospect Theory,” introduces a behavioral and strategic framework that models interactions among platforms, users, and governments in response to AI-driven disinformation. Utilizing an evolutionary game approach combined with prospect theory, the research reveals that effective governance relies on dynamic coordination among all three actors rather than isolated regulatory or technological interventions.

AI-driven disinformation reshapes the risk landscape for platforms. Unlike traditional misinformation, which often required manual effort and coordination, AI-generated disinformation can be produced at scale, personalized, and continuously adapted to user behavior.

The Vulnerability of User-Generated Content Platforms

User-generated content platforms are particularly vulnerable due to their open nature and reliance on user participation. These platforms serve as both information distributors and gatekeepers, creating a dual responsibility that becomes increasingly challenging to manage as content volumes surge.
