AGs Demand xAI Do More to Stop Grok Deepfakes
A bipartisan coalition of 35 Attorneys General (AGs), co-led by Connecticut AG William Tong, North Carolina AG Jeff Jackson, Pennsylvania AG Dave Sunday, and Utah AG Derek Brown, has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of nonconsensual intimate images (NCII). In a letter directed to xAI, the coalition urged the company to enhance its efforts in preventing its AI chatbot, Grok, from generating and distributing AI-created NCII, including content involving minors.
Concerns Raised by the Coalition
In their correspondence, the AGs highlighted alarming reports indicating that Grok was being utilized to “nudify” real individuals, thereby amplifying harmful content. The coalition expressed concern that xAI’s product features, including a controversial “spicy mode”, alongside its marketing strategies, have inadvertently contributed to the proliferation of such problematic content.
Call for Specific Actions
While acknowledging xAI’s recent mitigation efforts, the coalition made several specific demands aimed at increasing the platform’s accountability:
- Prevent NCII Production: The AGs called for measures to stop Grok from producing NCII entirely.
- Remove Existing NCII: There should be protocols in place to eliminate any existing NCII content generated by Grok.
- User Accountability: xAI must suspend and, where appropriate, report users responsible for creating NCII.
- User Controls: It is essential to provide X users with straightforward options to block Grok from responding to or altering their content.
- Safeguards Against Harm: The AGs emphasized the need for robust safeguards to mitigate harmful output across the platform.
Ongoing Investigations
This letter comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny of xAI. Recently, Arizona AG Kris Mayes initiated an investigation into the company, and California AG Rob Bonta issued a cease-and-desist letter related to similar allegations. These actions represent a growing concern among state officials regarding the ethical implications of AI technologies and their potential misuse.
The coalition’s demands reflect an urgent call for accountability and responsible innovation in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
