Advancing Responsible AI in Education

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape education, institutions are stepping up to ensure its responsible, equitable, and effective implementation. One such initiative is led by George Mason University’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), which is actively working to chart a path for schools to adapt to AI.

The Role of ERA.NOVA

Through the Educational Research Alliance of Northern Virginia (ERA.NOVA), a research partnership that connects CEHD with K-12 and state leaders, the college is gathering some of the region’s most innovative minds to define what AI readiness in education means. This year’s focus reflects the vision of CEHD Dean Ingrid Guerra-López and her school superintendent partners, positioning the alliance as a catalyst for forward-thinking solutions in school districts.

Shifting Perspectives on AI

At the ERA.NOVA Fall Convening, state policymakers, technology officers, superintendents, and faculty researchers united to explore the changes AI brings to the K-12 landscape in Virginia. There was a collective understanding that the question is no longer whether AI belongs in education, but rather how to implement it in ways that enhance instruction, prepare students, and ensure safety.

Superintendent Dan Hornick of Orange County Public Schools emphasized the importance of teaching students to use AI responsibly, stating, “If we do not teach students to use AI responsibly, we are not preparing them for the world they are entering.” His district has created flexible guidelines and integrated AI discussions into curriculum planning and professional learning communities.

State Guidelines and Future Skills

At the state level, Calypso Gilstrap, executive director of the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Innovation, presented the commonwealth’s Guidelines for AI Integration Throughout Education. These guidelines stress the necessity of age-appropriate AI usage, careful tool selection, family engagement, and collaborative policy development. Gilstrap noted, “AI readiness is no longer optional,” illustrating the urgency with the fact that there are currently 32,000 jobs in the U.S. with AI in the title.

By 2029, the Virginia Department of Education expects AI to be integrated into problem-based learning at all grade levels, starting as early as kindergarten. Gilstrap emphasized that AI should not be a shortcut to learning; students must learn to critically assess AI-generated content and maintain human connections while using digital tools.

Research Insights and Ethical Considerations

From a research perspective, Elizabeth Davis, a postdoctoral fellow with EdPolicyForward, shared findings from the AI for Responsive Inclusive School Enhancement (ARISE) project. This project examines how districts can leverage AI to enhance research interpretation and expand evidence-based interventions for school improvement. Davis coauthored two significant publications on AI in K-12 education, highlighting the importance of AI literacy, ethical design, and data governance.

Davis stated, “Efficiency must never come at the cost of human judgment,” echoing sentiments voiced by district leaders regarding the need for a balanced approach to AI in education.

Local Actions and Teacher Preparation

District technology leaders shared practical examples of how they are turning policy into action. Aaron Smith from Loudoun County Public Schools stressed the importance of protecting students and ensuring that tools are developmentally appropriate. “Our focus has to be on protecting students and understanding what K–12 really needs from AI,” he said.

Audra Parker, director of George Mason’s Office of Teacher Preparation, highlighted that preparing educators is crucial for successful AI integration. “AI readiness is ultimately about people,” Parker explained, emphasizing the need for structured opportunities for teachers to build confidence and enhance their teaching practices.

A Shared Vision for the Future

Participants agreed that the responsible integration of AI requires more than just access to new tools; it necessitates a shared framework grounded in educator expertise, ethical design, and a commitment to equity. Some districts are even involving students in AI policy discussions, forming advisory committees to gather their feedback on technology use in classrooms.

As noted by Gilstrap, “Students are already using these tools; the question is how we guide them to use it well.” This reflects the growing role of CEHD as a thought leader in preparing educators and students for a future increasingly influenced by intelligent systems.

The Fall Convening was the first of several sessions in ERA.NOVA’s 2025–26 series focused on AI in education. Future discussions will continue to explore readiness, capacity building, and ethical implementation across all educational levels, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure that AI strengthens human development and expands educational opportunities.
