Upcoming AI Technology Action Plan: Strengthening Ethical Standards
Malaysia is set to implement its AI Technology Action Plan 2026–2030, aimed at fortifying ethical safeguards and governance frameworks regarding the use of artificial intelligence. This initiative was recently announced by the Digital Minister, emphasizing the importance of ethical AI deployment in the nation.
Building on Previous Guidelines
The forthcoming action plan will expand upon the existing National Artificial Intelligence Governance and Ethics Guidelines (AIGE), which were introduced to mitigate risks associated with AI misuse. The Minister noted, “Ethical use of AI is a critical issue. We’ve already implemented guidelines, and this action plan will further reinforce them.”
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
The AI Technology Action Plan is a continuation of the AI Roadmap 2021–2025. It aims to enhance collaboration between key sectors including government, industry, academia, and civil society. The goal is to encourage widespread AI adoption, facilitate knowledge-sharing, and promote the sustainable development of AI talent within Malaysia.
Exploring Broader AI Governance
The government is also investigating a more comprehensive AI governance framework. The Minister expressed hopes to introduce formal measures by mid-2026, focusing on safety, transparency, and accountability. “We’re also looking into AI governance. Hopefully, by mid-next year, we’ll be able to introduce a framework that addresses safety and accountability in AI,” he stated.
Addressing the Challenges of AI Development
With the accelerated pace of AI development, there is a pressing need for stronger oversight mechanisms to ensure responsible technology deployment. The Minister remarked, “I view this positively. AI is the future. People will increasingly use applications powered by it, and we must be prepared. Of course, as we move forward, challenges will arise, including potential risks. These are the aspects we need to address.”
Opportunities for Innovation and Employment
The rapid growth of AI presents significant opportunities for innovation and employment. The Minister urged Malaysians to embrace the evolving digital landscape, aligning with the government’s vision of a fully digitalized nation. He stated, “To achieve this, we are focusing on infrastructure, security, and talent development. Ultimately, we must ensure the country is ‘AI-ready’.”
