Three large studies employing discrete-choice experiments involving 3,268 consumers were conducted. Participants made choices between two AI products differing in key attributes, requiring them to consider trade-offs. For instance, participants had to decide between an AI product offering high personalization but low privacy versus one ensuring high privacy but limited personalization.
In one experiment focused on an AI-based pension planning app, privacy was identified as the most important feature for driving consumer choice, with an average importance score of 31%. This was followed by auditability (26%) and autonomy (23%). In contrast, understandability (11%) and personalization (9%) were of lesser importance.
Another experiment involving an AI-based equity investment management app revealed that while performance was critical (29%), privacy was equally important, hovering around 20%. Auditability and autonomy followed, while understandability and personalization remained relatively less significant.
The primary takeaway from this research is encouraging: incorporating responsible AI elements into product design can positively influence consumer choice, even amidst considerations of price and performance.

By embedding responsible AI into their broader brand positioning, companies can strengthen credibility and differentiation.
Additionally, aligning with partners and suppliers who share ethical priorities is essential for establishing a consistent image of responsibility across the value chain. For example, companies employing text-to-image models should collaborate with developers who responsibly curate their training data.

When integrated authentically into business operations, responsible AI practices may act as a buffer against potential setbacks. Companies that proactively adopt responsible AI principles are better equipped to withstand scrutiny in the face of inevitable AI errors and failures. Research indicates that companies with responsible data practices experience significantly less backlash during data breaches, suggesting that genuine commitment to responsible practices can mitigate consumer backlash during AI failures.
As regulatory bodies worldwide sharpen their focus on AI, companies that embrace ethical standards are likely to navigate emerging regulations with greater ease, avoiding potential legal challenges. Investing in responsible AI today positions companies at the forefront of both ethical leadership and market readiness.
