Ontario Tech Unveils Canada’s First School of Ethical AI

Ontario Tech University Launches Canada’s First School of Ethical Artificial Intelligence

On October 14, 2025, Ontario Tech University announced the establishment of Canada’s first and only School of Ethical Artificial Intelligence (SEAI). This groundbreaking initiative emphasizes AI governance and marks a significant step towards embracing the fourth industrial revolution.

Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ontario Tech, stated, “Ontario Tech’s school of AI is the first of its kind in Canada—built to lead a future where ethically designed artificial intelligence advances human potential, strengthens industry, and builds public trust.” He further emphasized the importance of decisively shaping AI to ensure it serves humanity and the planet.

Ethical by Design

Rooted in the university’s ethical innovation ethos, the School of Ethical AI champions the principle that technology must serve people and not replace or diminish them. All programs, research initiatives, and partnerships within the school will focus on ensuring that AI systems are designed with privacy, data protection, and a commitment to minimizing algorithmic bias.

In collaboration with the Mindful Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (MAIRI), the school aims to establish AI governance standards and national policy frameworks that will enhance Ontario and Canada’s leadership in ethically designed AI.

Interdisciplinary Excellence

The school recognizes that ethically designed AI requires diverse perspectives and unites experts across various fields including engineering, business, health sciences, education, communication, and social science. This interdisciplinary collaboration is intended to foster innovation grounded in empathy, aiming to improve the world.

Graduates will emerge not just as technical experts but as ethical leaders, equipped to question, design, diagnose, and deploy AI technologies that promote fairness, inclusion, and the well-being of humans and the planet.

Best-in-Class AI Curriculum

Ontario Tech currently offers one of Canada’s most comprehensive AI curricula, featuring over 66 AI-focused courses across six faculties. Notable programs include:

  • Master of Business Analytics in AI (MBAI) – Canada’s first business master’s program specializing in AI.
  • Master of IT Security – AI in Security (MITS—AIS) – A program addressing emerging AI-driven cybersecurity challenges.

Students will also gain practical experience through co-ops and internships with over 350 industry and community partners, applying various governance frameworks in real-world AI settings.

An Investment in Canada’s AI Ecosystem

Through its courses, research, and applied learning experiences, Ontario Tech aims to produce graduates who understand that AI is more than just a tool; it is a shared responsibility. These leaders will help position Canada as a principled leader in AI governance, committed to responsible AI development and ethics by design.

This initiative cements Ontario Tech University’s status as a global leader in ethical and human-centered innovation, ensuring that Canada remains at the forefront of a global movement where technology is guided by conscience and compassion, ultimately improving lives and the planet.
