Oman’s Initiative for Ethical AI Governance Expansion

Initiative Launched to Expand Comprehensive Ethical AI Governance

The Sultanate of Oman has initiated a significant step towards enhancing the scope of a comprehensive, rights-based Ethical AI Governance framework. This initiative represents a pioneering global standard for the ethical implementation, development, and use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, fundamentally rooted in human rights.

Workshop Overview

The launch occurred during a workshop focused on expanding this ethical framework, organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The event spanned two days and was supported by the Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha, alongside the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.

Inaugurated by Dr. Jokha bint Abdullah al Shukailiyah, Chief Executive Officer of the Oman Authority for Academic Accreditation and Quality Assurance of Education (OAAAQA), the workshop attracted specialists and professionals engaged in AI systems from both public and private sectors, as well as members of the Oman Human Rights Commission.

Objectives of the Workshop

The primary aim of the workshop was to discuss mechanisms for preparing national regulatory frameworks governing the use of AI systems within institutional operations. Key discussions revolved around:

  • Identifying challenges that authorities face in developing these regulations.
  • Considering legal, social, cultural, scientific, and economic dimensions crucial for formulating these frameworks.

Unesco’s Involvement

Oman has been selected by Unesco as one of the beneficiary countries to implement the AI Management System (RAM), under the framework of the Unesco Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. This involvement illustrates Unesco’s commitment to fostering ethical standards in AI across different nations.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in establishing a structured approach to AI governance, aiming to align technological advancements with the principles of human rights and ethical considerations.
