Navigating the EU AI Act: Critical Insights for Technology Leaders

The European Union (EU) AI Act has marked a significant shift in global AI governance, enforcing its first deadlines in February 2025. For technology leaders, particularly CTOs and CIOs, the stakes are high as compliance is essential to avoid costly penalties.

This regulation affects any business that utilizes AI systems and sells products or services within the EU, encompassing both developed and third-party AI solutions. 2. “We’ll just extend our cyber or privacy solution.”

3. “Compliance will slow us down.”

The EU AI Act explicitly bans eight AI practices due to their potential for harm:

  • Untargeted Facial Recognition Data Collection: Scraping biometric data without consent.

  • Real-Time Biometric Identification in Public Spaces: Live facial recognition by law enforcement is largely banned.
